A hugely versatile herb, basil can be used in stir fries, pasta sauces, salads and as a garnish to name but a few. It is also used medicinally and in cultural and religious ceremonies worldwide. Keep the flowers trimmed as soon as they sprout to keep up the foliage and pick regularly to encourage new growth. The flowers are edible but will limit the plants leaves. Can be grown in the garden or in pots, which have the added bonus of being movable when the weather starts to cool, as they don’t tolerate frost.
