A small and hardy deciduous shrub that fruits in early Summer. Part of the Grossulariaceae family which include other currants and gooseberry, the black currant originated in Northern Europe.
Canes will grow vigorously in their first year and then flower and fruit the second year. We recommend growing your canes against a fence or wall, or support with trellises. Great for growing in Tasmania as we have a cold Winter as a ‘chilling period’ that will assist fruit set. Black currants prefer a full sun position and grow best when given shelter from strong winds. Although they are tolerant of heavy wet soils, they do not like to be water logged and grow best in a rich well drained soil.
